Asian cuisines have been on the rise in Fishers over the last few years. New sushi, ramen and boba spots have been consistently popping up throughout the city. In such an ever-growing market, a new competitor, TeaG Boba Tea and Bakery, has just opened on 96th street.
Opened by real estate brokers Derek Fong and April Sun, the restaurant sells a variety of different teas and specialty desserts, including boba, milk tea, coffee, cakes, shaved ice and boba waffles. All are made using fresh ingredients.
“A lot of other companies use mostly powder to make their tea,” Fong said. “We use real fruit and real syrup so it’s healthier than just the powder. Even though it costs a little more we try to make it affordable.”
After living in Fishers for two decades working real estate, the opportunity to run a small business was given to Fong by his partner, Sun.
“She is the one who came up with the idea,” Fong said. “I was showing her the space and then she asked me if I wanted to get involved. I said ‘Sure!’”
While boba sales are typically lower in the winter than in the summer due to it being more of a warm weather treat, Fong prefers a slower start to the business.
“If we started up so busy, we might have messed up,” Fong said. “I kind of like this way with slowly graduating and making it better every day.”
Entrepreneurship can be tough, especially being a small business owner like Fong.
“Running a small business is not easy, especially after COVID and all of these challenging times,” Fong said. “I encourage all the people to support local small businesses.”
