From November 2nd through the 5th, 45 of the best swimmers in Indiana traveled to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to share a weekend of practice and events together. This trip was created with the intent to build a connection for a group of elite swimmers in the state and help them learn from one another.
One of our standout athletes, Junior Collin Huston, was invited on this trip. He was selected based on his times in the breaststroke events that qualify him for the junior national meet this coming December.
We sat down and asked Huston about this trip recently, and how the experience helped him.
“The best part, in my opinion, was whenever we walked to the dining hall, we would see mountains,” Huston said. “[This] included Pikes Peak.”
As the trip was in the beautiful mountains of Colorado, the athletes selected were able to enjoy Garden of the Gods Park and many other unique landscapes.
The training aspects of this trip were intense, with multiple daily practices that included some of the toughest workouts the swimmers had completed in their careers. For Huston, the workouts and ability to race other fast swimmers helped prepare him for his junior season.
“This trip motivated me more than ever to race and become the best swimmer I can,” Huston said. “With the Olympic trials next year, I have never been more motivated.”
To help prepare for the trials, that will be hosted here in Indianapolis next summer, each athlete on the trip got t-shirts that said, “Peak in Paris.” As the 2024 Summer Olympics will be held in Paris, some of these athletes will be fighting for the opportunity to stand for the stars and stripes in the pool.
Huston and his teammates kick off the season at home against Noblesville on Tuesday,
November 21st.
