HSE is teaming up with the American Red Cross to help those in need after Hurricane Ian devastated communities throughout Florida and the Carolinas Sept. 28, 2022.

HSE hosted the blood drive Nov. 4. HSE’s Key Club and Blue Crew supervised the event alongside the American Red Cross. They hoped for 150 donors during the blood drive.

“The Red Cross have been partnered up with HSE for a couple of years. Blood drives usually happen every two years,” Jennifer Duncan from the Red Cross said. “One donation can save up to three lives and we have 117 donors signed up to donate, which will make a huge difference in our life saving mission.”

A blood drive is where people from organizations like the Red Cross come to schools or other locations and set up collection equipment, beds and other medical equipment.  

According to Suhita Chintalacharuvu, president of HSE Key Club, the drive targets spring and fall athletes who are not currently in their seasons. To donate, students can donate every 56 days, up to six times a year. In addition, donors must be in good health, feeling well, at least sixteen years old in most states, and weigh at least 110 lbs.  

“I think that 16 is the age requirement they chose because that is when the body is the right weight.” Duncan said. “It’s also when the body matures enough, and you’re probably almost done with puberty.”

Students were able to sign up during lunches Oct. 25 to Oct. 28 and the drive itself took place in the varsity gym Nov. 4. 

“It’s so important to donate blood now, especially with Hurricane Ian ravaging Florida and other states,” Chintalacharuvu said. “One donation can save up to three lives and someone needs blood every two seconds.”
