Brooke Atwood is a Junior who dances at Dance Magic Performing Arts Center as well as the Fishers Fusion Dance Team

Q: What, and if anyone who sparked your passion for dance?

A: I started traveling to different competitions at the age of 5. There were assistants and older girls teaching classes and also competing. Everyone was incredibly talented and I knew I wanted to dance just like them. Professional dancers/ choreographers including Kristin McQuaid, Marcea Lane, and Tiffany Maher also inspired me to dedicate my life to dance.

Q: What does your normal day consist of when you have dance? how do you balance that and school?

A: On a daily basis I incorporate around 4-5 hours of practice into my schedule. I go to school and try to squeeze in as much homework I can before 4 which is when I usually leave for dance. Around 9:30 I will finish any school work I haven’t completed yet and relax, eat dinner, etc. Balancing school and dance is very challenging however having a set schedule and decent time management skills I work through it.

Q: Who’s been your biggest inspiration?

A: Although she is not a professional dancer, Carrie Underwood has been a huge inspiration to me. I love dancing to her music. She represents strength, courage, determination, and grace. Just like her, I hope to inspire others through my profession.

Q: What was your reaction when you found out you got the scholarship?

A: It still feels surreal knowing that I received a scholarship that could change my life. I never thought I would be talented enough or have the “look” a school like AMDA (The American Musical and Dramatic Academy) wanted. When I heard my name called at the closing show of the Tremaine Dance Convention, I couldn’t believe it. I knew that there were many other dancers that deserved the $60,00. However, I am very grateful to receive it!

Q: What are your plans for dance in the future?

A: As of right now, I’m hoping to go to either Purdue University or Ohio State and dance on the dance team. I would like to minor in dance along with whatever major I choose. Additionally, I have the option of going to either New York City or Los Angeles under my AMDA scholarship to pursue my professional dancer dreams. Whatever route I take, I hope to inspire young dancers and set an example for future generations!
