In honor of Black History Month, NBA TV is hosting two HBCU basketball games. 

Sekou Smith, an NBA TV reporter and an analyst for Turner Sports, died last month due to COVID-19. In a three-part memorial, the podcast he developed, former co-hosts and guests remembered him for his love of basketball and humorous personality. At the age of 48, Smith began covering the NBA and the Indiana Pacers in 2001 for the Indianapolis Star. 

As NBA TV is one of the places Smith contributed his analysis and opinions the most, the company decided to televise two live men’s and women’s basketball games in honor of Black History Month. 

The target date for the games is Sunday, March 7th  between Jackson State University (Smith’s alma mater) and Southwestern Athletic Conference rival Grambling State University. Hosted by Jackson State, the games are scheduled for 3 p.m. (women’s) and 5:30 p.m. (men’s). The coverage will also include the Jackson State’s Sonic Boom of the South marching band. These games will also be the first to be broadcasted on NBA TV.
