Since the mid-1850s, journalists were referring to baseball as America’s national pastime. Even to this day, the sport is still holding up its popularity through the Major and Minor League Baseball. In Indiana, we do not have a Major League Baseball team, but we have five Minor League Baseball teams; the Evansville Otters, the Fort Wayne Tin Caps, the Gary Southshore Railcats, the South Bend Silver Hawks and the Indianapolis Indians. The nearest stationed Minor League Baseball team to Fishers is the Indianapolis Indians. If you have not had the chance to watch the team play America’s national pastime at Victory Field, then do not waste any more time. The Indianapolis Indians 2017 baseball season is coming to an end. Their final weekend of regular season home games is this weekend, Aug. 26 and 27.
The Ivy Tech lawn is a place where families can bring blankets and watch the game from an outfield view. Kids can play catch and run around, rather than the alternative of sitting in stadium seats for around two hours. Lawn seats are usually priced at around $11, which is much cheaper than reserved seats.
Junior Ava Allen experienced her first Indians game from the Ivy Tech lawn Sunday afternoon, July 30, when they played against the Pawtucket Red Sox. Allen witnessed the pitching staff set a Victory Field record of 19 strikeouts and a thrilling 3-2 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox.
“If I had to put my experience into one word, I would say electrifying,” Allen said. “I loved everyone’s energy at the game. Everyone had a smile on their face.”
The Indianapolis Indians have had a memorable season from Super Hero Nights to Friday Fireworks. Their games provide quality time for family and friends to sit back, relax and support one of Indianapolis’ Minor League Baseball teams. The Indianapolis Indians have also decided to host a Fan Appreciation Day on their last regular home game, Aug. 27. “People should attend these games because it is a great way to get involved with your community,” Allen said. “You can also meet new people, and just a great time all around.” Photo contributed by Indianapolis Indians’ twitter. Story by Ilene Marzke.
