Sophomore Mackenzie Fowler’s faith is a catalyst that lead her to create the Girls of God, a group where all high school girls around the Fishers community are able gather and make new friends. Fowler’s main hope for the group was to give high school aged girls an opportunity to share and discuss how their faith plays a role in their lives.

“I was passionate about starting this group because I was feeling very compelled to lead a small group this semester.” Fowler said. “I felt like God put it on my heart that some girls needed this group.”

For the past year, Fowler has been serving on the greeter team, parking team and events team at iTown Church. She has spent multiple days out of the week devoting her time towards serving her church by doing tasks such as helping attendance find a parking spot in a stress-free manner, working behind the scenes on all the church’s outreach projects, and greeting visitors at the door serving as the open arms of the church. With a year’s experience of welcoming people at iTown, Fowler felt like it was her mission to do the same by welcoming girls her age to Girls of God.

“I think that it’s very important that every person has a least one friend who they can do life with.” Fowler said. “Through this group, we have created a welcoming, non-judgmental atmosphere where girls can help out, encourage, and support other girls.”

Girls of God has had a positive effect on the lives of young women in our community, and members are touched by Fowler’s leadership traits and her openness towards them.

“Mackenzie is without a doubt one of the most influential people that I have in my life.” sophomore Grace Williams said. “In everything she does she does it with grace, love and kindness.”

In this large school students are in constant struggle to find ways to make it smaller. Girls of God is just one new avenue for HSE girls to make a connection and find their niche while supporting each other along the way. Story by Lulu Black
