While the idea of sharing a romantic night with your significant other, buying flowers and paying for expensive extravagant dinners may be on your agenda, you may find others practicing alternative ways of sharing their affection. What was once a fictional holiday coined from the popular television comedy, “Parks and Recreation”, “Galentine’s Day” has now become a celebrated practice.
“Galentine’s Day is a time when girlfriends get together and celebrate their friendships, affection and female empowerment,” junior Lauren Lee said. “It’s really just a fun girls get-together.”
Much like the sitcom intentions, “Galentine’s Day” is a day to celebrate females. With the rise in female empowerment, more students are inviting the idea of “Galentine’s” to support one another and celebrate their independence.
“I think in times like this we need some way to celebrate our gender and self-sufficiency as well as supporting one another,” Lee said. “Galentine’s Day is not meant to shame those in relationships, it’s purpose is to help make girls feel stronger within themselves.”
“Galentine’s Day” parties are not your average hang-out. Some can be found dressing up and going out on the town, treating themselves to nice dinners or splurging on unnecessary items while others can have a night in, spending time with people from the comfort of a friend’s home.
“We usually watch a chick-flick and eat junk food. We talk a lot about personal issues and help build each other up at the same time,” Lee said. I think it’s necessary we celebrate ‘Galentine’s Day’. Personally, it helps me solidify my friendships and really helps me recognize my worth overall.”
