Back in 1997, Netflix, an up and coming global video streaming service, began as a small DVD by mail business. Now a worldwide phenomenon, it’s taken television to a whole new level by providing easy to access original shows and movies to its viewers. Let’s take a look at one of the most popular shows from 2016 that has a new season premiering sometime this year.
Now, when Stranger Things first aired in July of 2016 and became “the most popular original digital series in the week after it debuted,” according to Tech Times, I decided that I just had to check it out. So my boyfriend and I popped some popcorn, dragged some fluffy blankets to the couch and began our binge. Being a huge fan of horror and sci-fi anything, I seriously dug this show- and not just because my gothic queen, Winona Ryder, played a lead role.
Set in fall 1983 in the fictional town of Hawkins, IN., Stranger Things tells the story of a group of too-smart-for-their-own-good kids, a worried mother, a good cop with a bad past, a few angsty teens and of course, Eleven, a telekinetic little girl turned government lab rat. The season follows their battle against a monster from a parallel, hellish universe called the Upside Down.
“You really need to go into the show expecting [unusual] things,” senior Jacob Daniels said. “It changes your perspective on reality. It’s so uncommon and strange, but no matter how strange it gets, the characters always persevere.”
Stranger Things’ Stephen King-esque plot adds to the overall gloomy yet exciting tone. Its endless cliffhangers, plot twists and jump scares keep the audience on edge and begging for more. I think it’s safe to say that I’m not the only one eagerly awaiting the second season due to premiere this year.
