On Wednesday, Feb. 11, all Hamilton Southeastern Schools and some Noblesville Schools went into perimeter lockdown after a threat posted on social media. The lockdown lasted approximately one hour, and was lifted when police detained the man responsible for the threat.
“A person not associated with the school, 20 or 25, not a student, made a social media post that caused some concern,” HSHS assistant principal Charlie Hoover said. “Central Office felt it was in our best interest, as a precaution, to have a perimeter lockdown.”
All doors at HSHS are locked during the school-day, but during a lockdown someone is posted at the three main entrances. Students can still leave, provided they have an early dismissal pass, but ID cards are checked more carefully to ensure the safety of all students, teachers, and administrators.
After being tipped about the nonspecific social media threat by a concerned citizen, police located the man and brought him into custody. The message he posted was not disclosed.
“I’ll say that I think he didn’t mean [the threat] the way it was taken,” Hoover said. “That’s the problem with posting on social media. This never used to happen, but now it’s so easy to post anything. That’s definitely a challenge people face today.”
