“I think it is really important to stress that there are people right in our community who can’t afford all the food they need for the holidays, so it is important to help them during this time when we give thanks for what we have and try to help those who may not have as much,” Steinmetz said. “We don’t always think about people in Fishers necessarily needing help buying things like food, but they do.”
Another holiday service the school participates in is the Adopt-a-Family program, which National Honor Society (NHS) works with every winter. NHS hosts fundraisers throughout the year to pay for struggling families’ needs, and to give them some relief during the holiday season. Over $600 have been raised by NHS’s restaurant fundraisers, when certain restaurants give a percentage of their earnings to the organization. On Wednesday, Nov. 19, NHS partnered with Culver’s and raised over $300.
“We have a restaurant night set up each month with various restaurants, which will help us to support almost 40 families,” NHS treasurer Cailin Touseull said.
While many services that students are involved in are hosted by the school, some students, such as junior Claire Coyle, perform services for the community outside of school. Every Thanksgiving for the past ten years, Coyle and her church have handed out baskets of food and toiletries to those in need in Indianapolis.
“It’s important to give back because if it was the other way around, other people would still be trying to help the less fortunate,” Coyle said. “I remember a lot of times when people got really emotional when we gave them their basket and looking back, it just feels really good knowing that we helped a lot of people.”
