As the 2024 Track and Field sectional tournament begins, Sophomore Riley Schamp looks to help the Royals their first State Championship since 2013. Going into the post-season, Schamp continues to make his name known on the track.
Schamp has been running since “third grade, for Fishers Fire Track Club” said Schamp. As a kid, Schamp was surrounded by track, Schamp said “My dad was an amateur triathlete, and my mom’s side of the family had multiple talented runners.” Said Schamp, “Coming to a conclusion I’m not going to the NBA, I went with running.” Explained Schamp. As he took off running, never once did [he] look back.
To some, running is a punishment, for Schamp track is a happy place. “At the end of the day we just run in circles,” said Schamp “you can’t take it too seriously, but what I will take seriously is winning. I like to have fun and winning is fun.”
Schamp is a runner on the distance side, he does “Whatever the longest event, is I’m ready for, right now I run the 3200. (roughly 2 miles)” said Schamp. “It’s something about flying around the track at 4:40-4:30 mile pace making quick and fun moves is just fun for me. I also aspire to run the 5k on the track in college.” Explained Schamp.
“For high school breaking the 9-minute barrier for the 3200-meter.” Said Schamp. “And as an off event breaking 4:10 in the mile.” Explained Schamp. As Schamp heads towards the junior season, he plans to form the mindset of winning. “It’s All mental, our bodies are capable of so much, it’s all about how hard we push to the limits and see how long we can do it for.” Said Schamp
With the Regional meet right around the corner Schamp works towards the goal of competing at the State meet. After placing 5th at sectionals with a time of 9:40.02, Schamp is ready to make his name known at regionals.
