In honor of Black History Month, who is a person in current society you look to the most today that has broken a barrier? Why does their story have an impact on you?
A person in society I look up to is Shonda Rhimes. She’s an award-winning executive producer and author. You may be familiar with some of her work such as Bridgerton, Grey’s Anatomy & Scandal. She’s shown how important it is for Black creators to have a voice and perspective in Hollywood. I admire her work and dedication to storytelling.
Who is someone you feel should have a spotlight on them?
A person who deserves the spotlight is Emmy award-winning correspondent and author Antonia Hylton. I recently saw an interview where she discusses her new book Madness: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum. Her book discusses what happened to Black patients at Crownsville Hospital in Maryland. I think these stories are important, showing American history that’s often overlooked.
What role does Black History Month have in your life?
Black History Month is a time of reflection and aspiration, understanding our connection to the past and being intentional in the present. It not only highlights the stories of those who have contributed to our society, Black History Month allows doors to open for future generations.
