Every year, approximately a dozen and a half senior boys from all walks of life and social groups come together for a few hours for a magnificent show of pageantry and humor called Mr. Royal.
Essentially, Mr. Royal is a themed male beauty pageant sponsored by National Honor Society which includes a group dance, a strut, individual talents and interviews. At the end of the night, multiple awards are handed out, including; Mr. Talent, the guy with the best talents and abilities, Mr. Strut, the guy with the fiercest walk, Mr. Spirit the guy with the most energy and pride, Mr. Riley, the guy who raises the most for Riley Children’s Hospital, Mr. Dance, the guy with the best moves, Mr. Entertainment, the guy who puts on the best show and of course, the coveted title of Mr. Royal.
This year, the theme is A Night at the Movies. The contestants will each portray a certain movie icon during the strut section of the show, and viewers are sure to see references to their favorite pieces of cinema.
Behind the scenes, the show takes over a month of preparation. Members of National Honor Society split into various committees in order to tackle their respective part of the event.
“I am a part of the costume committee,” senior Courtney Kocal said. “We help all of the boys with the outfits they are going to wear in the show, as well as build a big prop that is used throughout the show. One of the things we created is a large popcorn box that the boys use during the show. We decided to make this because the theme is A Night at the Movies, and popcorn and movies go together.”
The show truly has something in it for everyone to enjoy, even underclassmen who may not personally know the contestants are sure to laugh at the hilarity that ensues throughout the show.
“What I’m looking forward to is the talent portions of the show. The boys have some really cool stuff planned that everybody will enjoy,” Kocal said. “People should come to Mr. Royal because it is a chance to see their fellow classmates do some crazy stuff. The show is so good and so funny and everybody will love it.”
